SAN MARCOS, Texas –- U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Justin Boyce, heating ventilation and air conditioning maintainer with the 49th Civil Engineer Squadron, rolls his kayak from underwater here Feb. 19. Rolling was one the primary skills learned by Airmen a spouse and a civilian participating in Outdoor Recreation’s kayaking trip to San Marcos. Knowing how to roll allows paddlers to take on more challenging rapids without the fear of flipping and not being able to get upright. Each Airman, spouse and civilian on the trip walked away with a better understanding of both how to manage themselves on a white-water rapid and how to cope through the stress of work in a healthy way. SAN MARCOS, Texas –- Ted Brinegar, director of Outdoor Recreation at Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., stands in the doorway of the Power Olympic Outdoor Center here Feb. 17. Brinegar led a group of six Airmen one civilian and one spouse on a kayaking trip to the Olympic Training Center to learn from kayaking great and former Olympian Ben Kvanli. The center is run by the Red River Racing Team, consisting of Kvanli and his team of instructors who regularly host small groups of paddlers for training. Brinegar helped found the Red River Racing Team with Kvanli 15 years ago when both were attending Texas State University.
